Предшественником этой организации был Легион кавалеров Медали почета [Medal of Honor Legion], основанный в 1890 группой награжденных этой медалю ветеранов Гражданской войны [ Civil War] и войн с индейцами [ Indian Wars], устав которого был принят Конгрессом США [ Congress, U.S.] в 1955 с наименованием "Легион отважных воинов Армии и Флота США" [Army and Navy Legion of Valor of the United States]. Высшая военная награда в США; учреждена в период Гражданской войны в 1862, вручается президентом США от имени Конгресса [ Congress, U.S.]. Представляет собой бронзовую звезду, обрамленную лавровым венком, покрытым зеленой эмалью. Существует в двух вариантах для сухопутных сил и ВВС и для ВМФ и морской пехоты. Во время второй мировой войны эту награду получили около 500 человек. Среди награжденных был Д. Эйзенхауэр [ Eisenhower, Dwight David (Ike)], но он отказался принять медаль, заявив, что не заслужил ее. Награжденным этой медалью по достижении 65-летнего возраста выплачивалась пенсия в размере 10 долларов в месяц - по ставкам 1861.
